The Canon i455 photo printer is a small but robust printer that produces photographs slowly but nicely for around $100. It also produces crisp text and images, and it has a high-speed USB 2.0 direct-print connection for printing directly from PictBridge-compatible cameras. Given all of this, the i455's $79 pricing is difficult to match. Budget-conscious photographers should check out the comparable priced for a somewhat quicker picture printer (that's slower at text, though). Although it may print straight from a compatible digital camera, the ideal method to utilize this two-tone, light-and-dark-gray picture printer is to connect it through USB to a PC or Mac (not included).
The software that comes with the i455 is the same as what comes with the more costly Canon picture printers, and it features Easy-PhotoPrint, a simple and enjoyable tool for arranging, grouping, cropping, and enhancing photos. Selecting the "Photo noise reduction—strong" print option from the Easy-PhotoPrint settings menu, for example, brightens somewhat muted-looking colors and removes any banding.Colors are further enhanced by the Vivid Photo option in Easy-PhotoPrint. Image Optimizer, Photo Optimizer Pro, and Photo Noise Reduction are all options in the print driver.
Easy-WebPrint, a program that adds the I (for Internet) to the i455, is another helpful piece of software. Easy-WebPrint makes it simple to print Web pages by intuitively addressing concerns like whether to print background colors and how to prevent chopping off content on the right side of the page. In CNET Labs tests, the i455's speed was variable; it printed a letter-size picture in 3.3 minutes per page (mpp). This is close to the Canon i475D's performance of 3.2mpp, although it's far slower than the i560's 1.1mpp. The i455 printed text at 5.5 pages per minute (ppm), which is similar to the i475D's performance but slower than the i560's 6.8ppm. The picture-enhancement capabilities included in Canon's printing package contribute to the i455's photo-printing abilities being exceptional for such a low-cost photo printer. The i455's ability to print professional-looking, smoothly detailed pictures on photo paper at default settings was demonstrated by a test photo produced on photo paper at default settings.
